Don't Get Struck by Lightening! Use HDTV Surge Protection
By Dean Iggo
As anyone who has been the victim of a power surge or a lightning strike can tell you, using HDTV surge protection in your home is a must. Every year, thousands of people end up with fried appliances and computers because they didnt make that small investment in a surge protector. Even if you dont live in a area that gets thunderstorms often, like the Pacific Northwest, you are still subject to power surges due to maintenance work on power lines and similar kinds of things. If youve just invested the money into a HDTV, then here is a look at HDTV surge protection.
There are two basic lines of thinking when it comes to HDTV surge protection. You can go to your local hardware store, buy a basic surge protector and use that. While using a basic surge protector is better than not using one at all, there are things you need to look out for. Not all surge protectors are made equally. Check to see if the one you bought can stand up to a lightning strike. Some of the protectors on the market are only good for power surges.
A second choice is to actually buy a surge protector made for HDTVs. These protectors, which retail for about $50.00, not only protect your HDTV and its components like a home theatre system, a HDTV cable box and an expensive game system from lightning strikes and power surges, but they also come with a filtering system designed specifically for your HDTV.
An HDTV uses much higher frequencies than a regular TV. Sometimes, with regular surge protectors, the high frequencies used by HDTV can bleed through and affect the quality of your picture. With a HDTV surge protector, filters are used that make sure that doesnt happen. They may cost a few dollars more than a regular surge protector, but the investment is well worth it.
Surge protectors should be a major part of everyones home. With the invention of surge protectors that not only protect your HDTV but also filter out frequencies that can disturb your picture quality, there is no reason why these HDTV surge protectors arent part of everyones home.

HD-ready TV...An integrated HDTV or HD-ready TV, as it is more commonly known, comes with an in-built tuner which saves you from spending extra cash on a receiver for HDTV. But if you are planning on a satellite or cable connection then such a tuner may be redundant as you will have to have the receiver that the satellite or cable company provides you. There is also the concern that HDTV being a new technology will go through significant changes and your built-in tuner may not support the upgrades. Things become that much more simpler with a separate receiver.
